Leading Healthcare Executives Cite Emerging Trends, Growing Role of Tablet PCs in Clinical Mobility Initiatives

Advisory Board’s Insight Helps Shape Motion Computing’s Product Strategy of Delivering Total Hardware, Software Packages to Healthcare Providers

Austin, Texas, Jan. 24, 2005 – Tablet PCs are playing an increasingly significant role in helping most leading health systems improve patient care and clinical productivity – a trend expected to continue throughout 2005 and beyond, according to a consensus of independent healthcare executives comprising the Motion Computing® Health and Life Sciences Advisory Board.

In 2005, the advisory board also expects:

  • more advanced ways of measuring the impact of tablet PCs on clinical workflow and productivity;
  • acceleration of clinical system deployments to improve patient safety, clinician workflow and productivity;
  • continued implementation and maturation of wireless infrastructure and associated security;
  • design integration of point technologies, such as security, data input/access capabilities, that make usage even more natural; and
  • improved performance in battery life, weight, screen clarity and external device integration.
“Tablet PC deployments are growing, either in discrete departments and application areas or as part of more pervasive clinician mobility or patient safety initiatives,” said Alan Cranford, senior vice president and CIO of Vanguard Health System and Motion™ advisory board member. “A year ago, many hospital systems were in the process of implementing wireless networks and piloting various form factors to determine which made the most sense for physicians and nurses. While some of that continues, the data I have observed suggests a majority of leading health systems are now successfully implementing tablet PCs.”

“Our research indicates continued acceleration of wireless infrastructure and point of care devices, like tablet PCs, being used in both inpatient units and outpatient settings," said Dave Garets, president and CEO of the HIMSS Analytics. "In high acuity areas such as emergency departments, operating rooms, and intensive care units, and in a variety of outpatient settings, caregivers are seeing the benefits of lightweight, mobile input and access tools to enhance care and clinical productivity.”

Motion’s Health and Life Sciences Advisory Board of clinical, technology and business thought leaders is intended to be representative of the broader health industry. The advisory board's practical insights into clinician requirements and usage factors, combined with Motion’s industry expertise, helps Motion meet the needs of its rapidly growing list of health industry customers which include hospital systems, academic medical centers, physician clinics, homecare agencies and pharmaceutical companies.

From nurse charting to electronic medical records, medication administration, departmental forms automation and case management, products such as Motion’s thin and light M1400 Tablet PC already are enabling health organizations to use technologies more efficiently and improve productivity and clinical care. For instance, Lancaster General Hospital in Lancaster, Pa., is using Motion tablets at patient’s bedsides to prevent nine to 15 potential errors per day, in conjunction with a medication administration system using bar-coding technology.

Six of the top 10 hospitals listed in U.S. News & World Report’s 2004 annual ranking of leading hospitals use Motion tablet PCs. In one of the largest tablet PC implementations, HealthSouth Corp. is deploying 5,000 Motion tablet PCs throughout its nationwide network of about 1,400 outpatient rehabilitation facilities. The tablets have already streamlined workflow and productivity for clinicians and enhanced patient care.

Motion’s success in healthcare can be attributed not only to obtaining regular guidance from its advisory board, but also surveying the healthcare community at large about mobile form factor and accessory needs. Motion developed many of the features in its award-winning M1400 Tablet PC – including a wide viewing angle screen, integrated biometric security and enhanced audio – based largely on input received during interviews with hundreds of nurses, physicians and other clinicians.

“Our clinical workflow and safety improvement initiatives require mobility,” said Pam Wirth, vice president and CIO of Susquehanna Health Systems and chairperson of HIMSS. “Motion’s M1400 Tablet PC enables our clinicians to easily input and access information in our Siemens applications while moving from place to place.”

In addition to enterprise customers, Motion’s business momentum and product innovations have made the M1400 a product of choice for many of the leading software suppliers, enhancing the value customers receive from using clinical systems. Motion’s products have been used by customers with every major enterprise or departmental clinical software application, including Bridge Medical, Cerner Corp., Eclipsys Corporation® , Epic Systems Corporation, IDX Systems Corporation, MEDITECH, McKesson Corporation, Siemens Medical Solutions, Philips Medical Systems and Stentor, Inc®.

As with health systems, Motion products have received support both from physician clinics and homecare organizations that use software from a variety of vendors. Examples of these software vendors include A 4 Health Systems® , AllScripts Healthcare Solutions, Amicore® , CareCentric, Cerner Physician Practice (formerly VitalWorks), MediNotes Corporation, Misys Healthcare Systems, and WebMD Practice Services.

“We have found the Motion M1400 Tablet PCs to be a fit for many of our hospitalists who can use them to improve productivity and service by accessing clinical information and Stentor images wirelessly with our McKesson Portal,” said Richard Gibson, M.D., chief medical informatics officer at Providence Health System in Portland, Ore.

“Clinicians across settings have enthusiastically embraced Motion tablet PCs, demonstrating that anytime, anywhere access to information enhances clinical care, productivity and workflow while unlocking value from the applications and infrastructure health organizations have been investing in,” said Joel French, vice president of health industry for Motion. “Our advisory board, customer, partner and focus group interactions have also affirmed the continued maturation of wireless, security and application environments that more fully exploit unique advantages of tablet PCs in general and Motion’s family of tablet PCs and accessories specifically for health settings.”
